This works!
If you are stuck at the purple screen, do these steps!!! (Only on 3GS or 4)
1) put your iphone to Airplane mode.
2) Go to –> Setting –> safari- -> Cookies –> Accept.
3) Double tap home button.
4) Press and hold to quit safari (in multitask mode). it needs to be off
5) Clear all Cache andn cookies.
6) Open safari and go to jailbreakme.modmyi.com<—- go to this and not jailbreakme.com
7) If cannot, Repeat!

I have tried this, it does work. It took me a while to work out how you force quite safari from this description. If anyone is wondering you do it in the multitask mode and you hold you finger over the app icon. It is the same as removing an app from the main screen
Once you have force quite safari, turn on your wifi. This is obvious as you need the internet to do this.

Nope, just went through the steps and i get the same result, 3gs ios4 crashes, I get to the start screen, goes to the leopard splash back, then safari crashes. Thanks for trying though. I’m guessing its just the server being wayyyyy over loaded.

I have gone to the jailbreakme.com website from my itouch 3.1.3 and slid the bar. The itouch resets and my passcode screen comes up. I enter the passcode, and it looks as if nothing has been added (cydia) and nothing jailbroken.
Why is this?
FYI my model is an MB528LL (2G 8GB) if that makes any difference
